Celebrating Musical Excellence at MCW's 150th Anniversary Gala with the Merida Trio

As Musicians Club of Women celebrates its historic 150th Anniversary Gala, we are honored to feature the Merida Trio, an ensemble comprising MCW members who are each distinguished in their musical careers. The trio includes cellist Jean Hatmaker, violinist Charlene Kluegel, and pianist Katherine Petersen.

Jean Hatmaker – Cellist

Jean Hatmaker is a cellist known for her expressive and versatile performances. A founding member of the Chicago-based Kontras Quartet, Jean has collaborated with a range of ensembles and artists across genres. She has an extensive orchestral background, serving as principal cellist with several orchestras and is currently with the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra. Jean is also a dedicated educator, teaching at Grace Lutheran School of River Forest and maintaining a private studio.

Charlene Kluegel – Violinist

Violinist Charlene Kluegel is celebrated for her vibrant performances and versatility. She has collaborated internationally and has been part of ensembles like the Fifth House Ensemble. Charlene co-founded Duo FAE, focusing on music by female composers. She is an advocate for new music, having premiered numerous works and her pedagogical contributions include teaching positions at prestigious institutions. Charlene plays on a 1780 Antonio Gragnani violin.

Katherine Petersen – Pianist

Katherine Petersen is noted for her dynamic piano performances and educational contributions. She has performed at notable venues worldwide and is a founding member of Duo FAE with Charlene Kluegel. Katherine teaches at the Music Institute of Chicago and actively participates in the Chicago Duo Piano Festival. Her education includes degrees from the New England Conservatory and the Schulich School of Music at McGill University.

Together, the Merida Trio represents a blend of historical awareness and forward-thinking musical exploration, perfectly embodying the spirit of Musicians Club of Women’s commitment to supporting women in music.
